As of September 2026, Elon Musk’s SpaceX ranks as the seventh-largest global company by market cap, placing it among Amazon, NVIDIA, Apple, and Microsoft in the world’s top 10 most valuable companies. The company operates primarily by launching massive rockets into space, with its workhorse Falcon 9 rocket completing 687 successful launches and hundreds of landings at the time of writing. Alongside its core launch business, SpaceX has expanded its portfolio through acquisitions of technology brands since its founding in 2002. These purchases span artificial intelligence, IoT technology, and developer tools designed to support the company’s broader operational ambitions.

The Acquisition of xAI and Grok
Founded in 2023 by Elon Musk and a team of former Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and Google Research engineers, xAI developed the Grok AI chatbot integrated into the social media platform X. By early 2026, xAI reached a valuation of $230 billion before completing a merger with SpaceX on February 2, 2026. Reuters described the transaction as the biggest merger and acquisition deal in history. The all-stock deal valued SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, unifying Musk’s space and AI ventures. Musk stated that part of the acquisition rationale involves transitioning AI infrastructure away from massive Earth-based data centers toward satellite data centers. Despite reaching a high valuation and securing a deal with the US Government to use Grok, xAI operated without the cash-generating abilities of rivals like Meta, Google, or Microsoft, and reportedly burned through $13 billion in 2025.
The Takeover of Anysphere and Cursor
SpaceX also acquired Anysphere, the developer of Cursor, an AI-native coding tool founded in 2022 by Michael Truell and three MIT classmates. By February 2026, Anysphere reached an annualized revenue of $2 billion, which doubled to $4 billion by the time the acquisition finalized in August 2026. The stock-only transaction totaled $60 billion, making it one of the largest startup acquisitions on record. The deal resolved computing bottlenecks for Cursor by granting the software company access to SpaceX’s extensive fleet of graphics processing units. Collaboration between the newly united firms began before the deal closed, with Grok versions 4.5 and 4.6 released on July 8, 2026, and August 12, 2026, respectively, trained using Cursor data.

Expansion into IoT Satellite Networks
Swarm Technologies built a global, low-cost network using tiny satellites known as SpaceBEEs. Each satellite measures about 4 inches square and roughly 1 inch deep, providing simple and low-bandwidth connectivity designed for smart devices, industrial monitoring equipment, sensors, meters, and trackers.
