Google CEO Sundar Pichai,during a recent podcast appearance,described this stage as “artificial jagged intelligence,” or AJI. The term, Pichai noted, may have originated with Andrej Karpathy, a specialist in deep learning who previously worked at OpenAI.
Karpathy, in a 2024 social media post, defined “Jagged intelligence” as the surprising reality that advanced language models can handle complex tasks while concurrently failing at simple problems.He cited examples of AI struggling with basic numerical comparisons and game-playing.
