Mark Zuckerberg recently shared data indicating that the average American has fewer than three close friends, while desiring around 15. This gap may be fueling the appeal of AI companions. Yet,Justin McLeod,CEO of Hinge,cautions against viewing AI as a true substitute for human connection.
“AI is great when it comes to providing services… What I’m concerned about are people using it as an emotional companion… like having this be my virtual boyfriend or girlfriend or my best friend–because it’s tempting… But like junk food, it’s ultimately going to feel really unfulfilling.”
McLeod emphasized the importance of mutual vulnerability and genuine interaction in fulfilling relationships,qualities absent in AI interactions. He added, “People want to feel useful and needed by friends as much as they want their friends to be there.”
