As of early February 2026,Saudi Arabia has officially replaced its customary residency permit (Iqama) system with a fully digital identity for expatriates called “Muqeem.” This impacts over 12.6 million residents.
What is Muqeem?
Muqeem is a digital identity accessible through the Absher platform and the Saudi Digital Government portal.It aims to streamline services for residents, reduce paperwork, and enhance security. The physical Iqama card is now obsolete.
Key Changes for Expats
- No More Physical Card: Expats no longer need to carry a physical residency card. Residency status is verified digitally.
- Access Through Absher & Digital Government Portal: Residents access their Muqeem facts through the Absher app (available on iOS and Android) and the saudi Digital Government portal (https://digital.gov.sa/en).
- streamlined Services: The digital ID simplifies access to government and private sector services,including healthcare,education,and banking.
- Employer Role: Employers continue to play a role in managing employee residency status through the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) portal.
How to Access your Muqeem ID
- Register/Login to Absher: Ensure you have an active Absher account. If not, register through the Absher website (https://absher.sa/) or app.
- Verify Your Identity: Follow the prompts within Absher to verify your identity.
- Access Muqeem Information: Once verified, your Muqeem details, including residency status, expiration date, and profession, will be available within the absher app and on the Digital Government portal.
