Killing Floor 3: Weapon Modding Guide – Attachments & Damage Types

Customizing Your Arsenal: A Deep Dive into Killing Floor 3’s Weapon Modding System

Killing Floor 3’s weapons perform admirably right out of the box, but if you find yourself wanting to tweak them, or specialize a weapon for a particular role, the game’s weapon modding system is precisely what you’re looking for. Adding weapon customization adds an extra layer of overall progression within the game, and is a welcome addition for players who enjoy the experience of modifying and improving their weapons.

The weapon modding process in KF3 is relatively straightforward, but the customization system contains several layers of detail that players should familiarize themselves with. This guide covers everything you need to know about installing different attachments and how to power them up as you level up your account within the game.

How to Mod Weapons in KF3

Weapons can be customized by interacting with the Armory within Nightfall’s Operations Hub. This is done either by heading directly to the terminal, or by pressing the Tab key to open the shortcut menu. From the Armory screen, select the weapon you want to customize, which will then bring up the weapon selection screen.

  • To modify weapons, follow these steps:
  • Choose a weapon to modify.
  • Create a new Loadout.
  • Select an empty mod slot.
  • Choose the Craft option.
  • Craft the attachment you prefer.
  • Equip the new attachment.
  • Save the Loadout.

Using Modified Weapons in KF3

To use customized weapons in Killing Floor 3, they must be purchased during a match or during the preparation phase before a match begins. The more attachments installed on a weapon, the higher its cost. Modified weapons appear as additional copies of the weapon itself within the Trader Pod.

It’s important to ensure that customized weapons aren’t prohibitively expensive, so they can be easily purchased when stronger Zeds appear in KF3.

Obtaining Crafting Materials in KF3

Weapon customization is available in KF3 from the start, but before modifying any weapon, crafting materials are required. Resources can be obtained simply by playing the game. Zeds have a chance to drop crafting materials when eliminated, and different types of Zeds drop different resources. It’s currently unclear if there are specific conditions or requirements to increase the chance of these materials dropping.

It’s also worth noting that mechanical devices like cameras and security stations can be destroyed to obtain additional materials. These items drop technical resources such as Electrical Parts and Scrap Metal.

Upgrading Weapon Mods in Killing Floor 3

Each attachment can be upgraded individually to receive larger stat boosts. To do this, head to the Armory and select the desired weapon, then select the attachment you want to upgrade. Clicking the right mouse button on the attachment will initiate the upgrade process.

Upgrading attachments significantly increases the stats they provide, and reaching Rank 3 unlocks a larger additional boost that affects the entire team. Each time a new attachment is crafted, that attachment receives a different team-wide bonus at Rank 3.

All Damage Types in Killing Floor 3

Killing Floor 3 features several types of elemental and physical damage, and depending on the damage type, it can be effective, neutral, or ineffective against certain enemy types or hit zones. Most weapons in Killing Floor 3 can be modified to inflict a different damage type, and it’s often best to have multiple copies of the same weapon firing different ammunition types.

Damage Type Effectiveness Effects
Acidic Effective against Armor and Zedtech, neutral against Flesh, ineffective against Mire Corrosion, Panic
Ballistic Neutral against Flesh and Zedtech, ineffective against Armor and Mire Knockdown, Stumble, Stun
Biological Effective against Flesh and Mire, ineffective against Armor and Zedtech Toxic, Confuse, Enfeeble
Cold Effective against Mire, neutral against Armor and Zedtech, ineffective against Flesh Freeze, Enfeeble
Cut Effective against Flesh, neutral against Mire, ineffective against Armor and Zedtech Bleed, Stumble
Electrical Effective against Mire and Zedtech, neutral against Armor, ineffective against Flesh Shock
Force Effective against Armor, neutral against Flesh and Mire and Zedtech Knockdown, Stumble
Heat Effective against Flesh and Zedtech, neutral against Armor, ineffective against Mire Burn, Panic
Sound Wave Effective against Armor, neutral against Mire, ineffective against Flesh and Zedtech Knockdown, Stumble, Stun

Best Damage Type in Killing Floor 3

If you’re looking for a damage type that performs well against most enemies, Force damage is one of the best options available. This damage type is either effective or neutral against most Zeds in KF3. Force damage is particularly good at destroying Fleshpound parts, but struggles somewhat against Scrakes. Otherwise, it provides strong performance in most encounters.

Alternatively, Heat damage is an excellent choice against a wide range of enemies. It’s not only effective against Flesh, Zedtech, and Armor, but the damage-over-time effect makes it very effective for hit-and-run tactics. However, Husks and the Chimera boss are resistant to Heat damage.

Changing Weapon Damage Type in KF3

The damage type of a weapon can be changed by equipping Ammo mods through the weapon customization system. Head to the Armory within Stronghold, then craft an Ammo mod of the type you want and attach it to the weapon.

However, not all weapons can have their damage type changed. Firebug weapons, excluding Dragon’s Breath, and special weapons like the Ifrit, do not have any mods that allow changing the damage type they inflict.
