Dallas Police Shoot, Kill Man Armed with Knife After Confrontation
Dallas police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday night on Lemmon Avenue after officers shot and killed a suspect armed with a knife, according to the department.
Officers responded to the 5100 block of Lemmon Avenue, near the intersection with Mahanna Street, following reports of a suspect threatening others with a knife.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux stated that when officers knocked on the door of the apartment, the suspect answered while holding a box cutter and immediately slammed the door shut.
“The suspect could be heard saying through the door, ‘Put away the Taser, I don’t want to f—— stab myself. I want to get shot,'” Comeaux said. “At the same time, officers could hear the suspect yelling at someone inside the apartment, ‘This represents your fault.'”
The chief explained that shortly after, the suspect opened the door and “aggressively charged at officers while reaching for the officer’s gun.”
Officers then discharged their firearms, striking the suspect in the upper torso. Officers immediately provided medical aid and the suspect was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Comeaux confirmed this is the third shooting involving a Dallas police officer in 2026.
No officers were injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
The incident follows a similar event in July 2025, where Dallas police fatally shot a man wielding a knife after he allegedly kicked at a home’s door and advanced toward responding officers. Body camera footage released by the department showed the suspect approaching an officer with multiple knives. According to police, less-lethal force was unsuccessful in deterring the man before officers fired. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Jake Miller, was reportedly experiencing a mental health episode at the time.
In that July 9th incident, a neighbor called 911 describing a man acting erratically and appearing to cut himself with a knife. The caller stated, “There is a man walking like across the street, and he’s walking back and forth with a knife in his hand…It looks like he’s cutting himself. He’s cutting himself on his arm.”
Officers repeatedly ordered Miller to drop his knives before ultimately shooting him, as seen in the body camera footage.
