Thiruvananthapuram: Following the removal of the Vigilance Chief from the post, the Home Department is preparing for an inquiry against DGP Sudesh Kumar. The probe is into a complaint that he earned lakhs by abusing his power. The Home Secretary has received a number of complaints, including that he bought gold from a jewelery shop in Thiruvananthapuram and did not pay it, and that he took huge bribes when he was the Transport Commissioner.

Sudesh Kumar, the former director of vigilance, was transferred to the post of jail chief a week ago. The resignation of the director of vigilance comes ahead of the launch of an investigation into the high-profile allegations against Sudesh. The Home Department has received complaints of abuse of power and ill-gotten gains.

Allegations against Sudesh Kumar

Sudesh, who came with his daughter to a leading jewelery shop in Thiruvananthapuram, bought 7 sovereign gold. When the jeweler announced a 5 per cent discount, he threatened the owner and employees and got a 95 per cent discount. The family visited China on October 28, 2016. The travel expenses of over Rs 15 lakh were sponsored by a Qatari businessman from Kozhikode. Other valuable gifts were also purchased from the merchant. He visited foreign countries six times without government permission, taking money from businessmen.

The Home Department has recommended a preliminary inquiry into the allegations. The Home Department is awaiting the final approval of the Chief Minister on the complaint.
