Activists wrap Sunak’s home in black fabric

Prime Minister Sunak has angered climate activists with his controversial oil and gas plans. Without further ado, his house became the target of an action.

Greenpeace activists have protested British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s energy policy. They climbed onto a building and covered it with black fabric – according to the environmental organization it is said to be Sunak’s home in his constituency in northern England.

At the request of the German Press Agency, the police in North Yorkshire said they were reacting to an ongoing protest at an address in Kirby Sigston. Investigators did not give details. Greenpeace tweeted a photo Thursday morning of activists holding a banner in front of the wrapped house. They then asked Sunak which was more important: “Oil profits or our future?”

A government official in London said about the protest action that they would not apologize for the right to secure the energy supply.

Harsh criticism of Sunak’s plans

The British government recently drew massive criticism from environmental and climate protection groups when it announced that it would issue hundreds of new licenses for oil and gas drilling, particularly in the North Sea. “Now more than ever it is imperative that we strengthen our energy security,” Prime Minister Sunak said on Monday. The project will create thousands of jobs.

According to the prime minister, private households and companies in Great Britain depend on “cheaper and cleaner energy”. Therefore, the government is taking steps to slow the rapid decline in domestic oil and gas production. Sunak referred to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine: Russian President Vladimir Putin had “made energy a weapon” and thus choked off economic growth in many countries.

“Worse Than a War Criminal”

Greenpeace and other organizations, on the other hand, accused the government of political maneuvering at the expense of the environment. Greenpeace UK said Sunak was “trying to polarize the climate debate and make cheap political points”.

Activists from the organization Just Stop Oil accuse him of being “worse than a war criminal”. He is aware that his decision will bring “unimaginable suffering” to billions of people, they claimed. “July was the hottest month we’ve ever seen because of fossil fuel burning,” the activists said.
