Advancements in Laparoscopic Surgery for Uterine Conditions: Preserving Fertility and Improving Patient Satisfaction

[메디컬투데이=최민석 기자] The “womb” symbolizes the woman. The uterus plays an essential role in the process where sperm and eggs meet to form a fertilized egg and embrace life. The uterus located in the pelvis is the size of an adult’s fist and weighs about 50 g. It is made up of muscle tissue and can stretch up to 30 times during pregnancy.

Recently, as the age of marriage is delayed and the number of unmarried women increases, women in their 20s and 30s are exposed to uterine diseases. Adenomyosis, one of the representative diseases, like uterine fibroids, the exact cause of its occurrence has not yet been clearly identified.

Adenomyosis is a disease in which the uterus becomes enlarged due to the abnormal position of the endometrial tissue in the uterine muscle layer. In some cases, there are no symptoms, but as the endometrial tissue in the muscle layer proliferates with the menstrual cycle, the uterus also enlarges, which can cause menorrhagia, extreme menstrual pain, pelvic pain, anemia, and infertility.

Treatments include drug treatment, hormone therapy and surgery. However, unlike uterine warts, the lesion is located within the muscle layer, so careful and gentle treatment is required. In particular, during surgical treatment, the boundary between the uterus and the lesion is not clear, so complex situations such as the patient’s age and pregnancy plan must be carefully examined to remove it delicately.

Kang Hee-seok, director of Kangdong Miz Women’s Hospital (specialist in obstetrics and gynecology), said: “In the past, the procedure had to be performed through an incision in the abdomen, but recently the treatment can be done through a laparoscope making a small hole of less than 2 cm around the navel.” She added: “Only the lesion can be treated without touching the uterine structure.” “Therefore, patient satisfaction is high because fertility can be preserved.”

In addition to adenomyosis, laparoscopic surgery can also be used to treat various female conditions such as uterine fibroids and endometriosis. This treatment involves a minimal incision while viewing the lesion, resulting in less scarring, less pain after surgery, and a quicker recovery.

Since the uterus is a life-spanning organ, women of childbearing age may consider uterus-preserving treatment using laparoscopic surgery. To achieve this goal it is necessary to support the delicate skills of medical personnel. This is because the shape, location and condition of the lesion is different for each patient. The more experience you have, the easier it will be to carry out the appropriate removal surgery for each case, so it is better to carefully examine the experience of the medical staff before choosing a hospital.
