Major technology firms, including Meta, Microsoft and‍ Google, have significantly‍ reduced their ⁤recruitment of ⁣recent graduates, according to a new report. The⁢ decline, analyzed by SignalFire, a venture capital firm, suggests that artificial intelligence is increasingly taking over entry-level⁤ tasks, impacting the⁢ job market for new graduates.

In 2024,new graduates accounted for only 7% of new hires,a 25% decrease ⁣from 2023 and a ‍more than 50% drop from pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Startups have also seen a decrease,with new graduate‍ hires falling from 30% in 2019 ⁣to under 6% in ‍2024.

asher Bantock,head‍ of research at SignalFire,saeid there is “convincing evidence” that AI is a major factor in the shrinking number of entry-level tech positions. He noted that these roles are notably susceptible to automation as they ⁤frequently enough involve routine tasks that AI can easily perform, such as coding and financial research.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, a $61.5 billion AI startup, predicts that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within one to five years, possibly causing unemployment to rise to between 10% and‍ 20%. ‍Amodei said AI could write almost ⁢all of the code for large companies within a year.

“On the jobs side of this [AI] I do have a⁢ fair amount of concern,” Amodei said at a Council on Foreign Relations event in ⁤March.
