Air Pollution Crisis in Eastern Pakistan Prompts City Closures

Widespread Air Pollution in Eastern Pakistan Leads to City Closures

Authorities in eastern Pakistan have taken drastic measures after toxic smog reached hazardous levels, sickening thousands of people. The capital and second largest city of Punjab province, Lahore, has been particularly affected, prompting the government to shut down schools, offices, shopping malls, and parks in three cities, including Lahore, until Sunday (12 Nov).

The air quality index in Lahore, which measures the level of small, harmful particles in the air, has been consistently high, hovering around 400 for several days. This is a stark contrast to the generally safe air quality index of 100 or below. Lahore’s proximity to the Indian city of Amritsar in the northern Indian state of Punjab also exacerbates the region’s air pollution woes.

In neighboring India, New Delhi, the capital, is also grappling with a surge in air pollution. On 7 November, the air quality index in New Delhi peaked at 300, nearing the dangerous level of 301-500.

It is evident that air pollution knows no borders, and urgent action is needed to address this pressing issue that affects the health and well-being of millions in the region.
