Alejandro González Iñárritu’s satirical film Digger is on track to be one of the biggest box-office failures of all time, according to WIRED. The costly project stars Tom Cruise in heavy prosthetics as an exaggerated American oil billionaire, upending conventional cinematic approaches to climate change.

Tom Cruise Stars in a Satirical Play Within a Movie

However, Iñárritu reveals early in the runtime that audiences are watching a play titled Fossil Fools being performed on a decaying theater stage that continually loses power. Cruise is not playing the oilman directly, but rather an actor portraying Rockwell within this dystopian future setting. The narrative eventually reveals that the play depicts events that occurred decades prior, forcing both the 2026 film audience and the internal theater audience to confront the villainous portrayals of the characters.

Themes of Climate Misinformation and Censorship

The narrative explores institutional deception regarding environmental collapse. Digger ignores warnings issued by his own corporate staff about the unfolding platform disaster, while the administration led by John Goodman implements a literal firewall that censors all mentions of the climate crisis, including specific terms like Al Gore, to manipulate public perception.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu discusses DIGGER and directing TOM CRUISE

WIRED noted that the film initially resembles Adam McKay’s 2021 Netflix hit Don’t Look Up, which followed scientists trying to warn humanity about an incoming asteroid. While McKay’s project sought to make viewers less tolerant of leadership inaction by promoting public awareness, Digger questions the actual efficacy of storytelling and truth when facing a capitalist system driving environmental destruction. Ultimately, the film serves as a Looney Tunes–esque satire that challenges expectations of how climate change should be depicted on screen.
