Alexis Bledel Returns as Emily in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Finale
In a move that surprised fans, the Handmaid’s Tale brought back Alexis Bledel as Emily for its series finale, now available on Hulu. Her reappearance provided a poignant moment of reconnection following Mayday’s liberation of Boston.
Bledel’s Emily, a key figure as the show’s beginning, exited unexpectedly in Season 4. Season 5 explained her absence through June (Elisabeth moss), who learned Emily had returned to Gilead to join the resistance and hunt Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd). After that, Emily vanished—until now.

Emily resurfaced in a liberated Boston, encountering June along a familiar path. She disclosed her involvement in the resistance, operating from a nearby town. Like June, Emily maintains a complex yet loving connection with her family. Together, they visited the Wall, now adorned with inspiring messages from Gilead survivors, juxtaposed against the hanging bodies of Gilead Eyes.
Former showrunner Bruce Miller, who penned the finale, said bringing back Emily was always part of the plan. “Alexis has a complicated schedule and a complicated life, and it didn’t work out that it was a good time to do it until the end,” miller said. “She moved heaven and earth to get up to us, and so there were a lot more practical concerns than character and emotional concerns.”
Miller added that Emily was central to June’s journey. “Even before the show started, they were walking partners. so there was something about bringing her back at the end that if June was going to re-experience that part of her life, it felt like it was impractical to do without that person because without knowing that both of them had made it out, you couldn’t believe in the impossible being possible.”
Bledel won an Emmy for her portrayal of Emily in Season 1, during which her character endured horrific experiences, including the surgical removal of her clitoris as punishment for defiance.
After escaping Gilead with June’s help, Emily rebuilt her life in Canada, facing challenges in reconnecting with her wife and son.Ultimately, she felt compelled to return to Gilead to dismantle the regime from within.
Cherry Jones, playing June’s mother Holly, also returned in the season 6 premiere, having previously appeared only in flashbacks.
