Photo = AliExpress Chinese e-commerce platforms Ali Express (Ali) and Temu have been identified as having holes in protecting users’ personal information. It is claimed that although the number of users has exploded in a short period of time with ‘very low prices’, users’ personal information was not properly managed.

The Consumer Sovereignty Citizens Association, a civic group, announced on the 25th that it had reported AliExpress and Temu to Jongno Police Station in Seoul. It is alleged that the personal information of domestic users who provided personal information to Ali and Temu is not properly protected as there is a possibility that the personal information could be passed on to Chinese authorities. They said, “Article 7 of China’s National Intelligence Law clearly states that ‘all organizations and citizens of China must support and cooperate with China’s intelligence activities.'” He added, “There is no law that prevent Ali and others from passing on domestic user information. to Chinese authorities. ”” he claimed. The ‘Terms of Use Regulations’, which prevent users from knowing exactly what terms and conditions they are agreeing to, are also seen as a problem. The Korea Economic Daily checked Ali’s membership registration process and found that the terms and conditions of use were written in English for users to check before joining. Attention was drawn to the fact that, last March, around 8.87 million domestic Ali users were using the service without properly understanding Ali’s privacy policy and terms of use.

Ali explained, “The English page is the global section that appears when accessed without registering as a member in Korea,” and added, “We are updating the system immediately because there is a possibility that Korean customers may have confused.” Terms of Use written in English that can be read when registering as a member of AliExpress = Park Sun-jang, Secretary General of the Consumer Sovereignty Citizens Association, who wrote the accusation on the Ali Express website, said, “Domestic consumers do not know what terms and conditions they agree to regarding personal information and use of Ali-Te. He said, “There is a risk that personal information of domestic users will be transferred to the Chinese government regardless of the individual’s will, but they are completely unaware of this.” The government also confirmed the inadequate personal information management status of Ali and Temu. and issue fines or recommendations for improvement depending on the seriousness of the confirmed offences,” he said.

An Ali Express official said, “We are cooperating as much as possible with the Personal Information Protection Committee’s investigation,” and added, “Although Ali has established a personal information protection system in accordance with international standards (ISO), we will do our best to improve the matters identified, such as English terms and conditions.” he explained.
