Seoul City Council Approves Ordinance to Cut Funding for Seoul Social Service Center

An ordinance to stop the city of Seoul’s support for the Seoul Social Service Center, which provides public welfare services, was approved by the plenary session of the Seoul City Council.

The Seoul City Council passed the “Ordinance on Abolishing the Ordinance on the Establishment and Operational Support of the Social Service Center of the Seoul Metropolitan Government” during today’s special plenary session with 59 in favour, 24 against and 1 abstention among the 84 members present.

With the abolition of this ordinance, the 10 billion won contribution paid by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to Seowon will be cut.

The ordinance was proposed by five People Power Party lawmakers, including Health and Welfare Committee Chairman Kang Seok-ju, in February.

Seowon was founded in March 2019 under the leadership of former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon to provide high-quality social services such as long-term care directly to the public, but criticism was raised that the management was negligent and did not satisfy its public needs. function during Mayor Oh Se-hoon.

Lee Byeong-do, a Seoul city council member from the Democratic Party of Korea, opposed passing the ordinance, saying, “It is an ordinance that goes against the trend of the times to strengthen advertising.”
