Narendra Modi to Skip ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Cites Diwali Celebrations
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has informed Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that he will not be able to attend the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur in person. Rather, he will participate virtually due to his commitment to Diwali celebrations in India.
Anwar Ibrahim stated, “Indian Prime Minister Narendra modi has announced that he will not be able to attend the ASEAN Summit at the end of this month. Instead he will attend virtually. In India, Diwali celebrations are taking place. I respect his decision. Happy Diwali to him and Indians.”
The Malaysian Prime minister also highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between Malaysia and India, noting that India is a key partner in trade, investment, education, technology, and regional security. He mentioned a recent conversation with a colleague of Modi’s regarding efforts to further strengthen this relationship.
“Last night I spoke to one of Modi’s colleagues. We talked about efforts to make the Malaysia-India bilateral relationship more strategic and comprehensive. India is an critically important partner of Malaysia in terms of trade and investment. India and Malaysia have close cooperation in the fields of education, technology and security in the region,” Anwar Ibrahim added.
