Global tech giants Apple and Nvidia are expected to invest in OpenAI, which has established a position in the market by developing generative AI ‘ChatGPT’.
Foreign media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), reported on the 29th (local time) that Apple and Nvidia are in discussions to invest in OpenAI, the developer of ‘ChatGPT’.
According to reports, venture capital firm Thrive Capital is leading the effort to raise new funds for OpenAI, aiming to value the company at over $100 billion (about 133.5 trillion won). Earlier this year, OpenAI’s corporate value was estimated at $80 billion (about 106.8 trillion won).
It’s no surprise that Apple and Nvidia are likely to invest in OpenAI. Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT into Siri later this year, and Apple Fellow Phil Schiller reportedly agreed to join OpenAI’s board of directors in July, only to abandon that plan.
Nvidia supplies chips to OpenAI, which uses Nvidia chips to power its AI services.
Microsoft (MS), which has already invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI, is also planning to make additional investments in OpenAI, the WSJ reported. Foreign media outlets evaluated that Apple’s announcement of its intention to invest in OpenAI is unusual, as it has invested heavily in manufacturers to secure component supplies but has rarely invested in software startups.
Foreign media reported that “the large-scale investment competition in OpenAI is the result of the AI competition triggered by the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022,” and that “companies in various industries are investing a lot of money in AI companies such as OpenAI to get ahead of the AI competition and expand their market share.”
