Apple TV+ Exec on Emmy nods, Surprise Cameos, and What’s Next
Apple TV+’s head of programming, Zack Van Amburg, recently sat down to discuss the platform’s impressive Emmy nominations, the surprising cameos that graced their shows, and the exciting projects on the horizon. Van Amburg expressed his delight at the recognition, notably highlighting the effort and enthusiasm that went into securing guest appearances.
The Power of Cameos and Star Power
“Those cameos are not easy to come by in shows, and I think that everyone did it with a lot of joy,” Van Amburg shared. “they went all in on those characters. And I think you really feel it in the show.” He noted that these special appearances, which included Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, added a unique sparkle to their programming.
When asked about the absence of Apple executives like Tim Cook or even himself in these cameos, Van Amburg offered a contented response. “We’re happy exactly where we are,” he said. “I like where I sit.” This suggests a focus on the creative output rather than self-promotion.the conversation also touched upon Harrison Ford’s first-ever Emmy nomination for his role in Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.” This nod underscores the platform’s ability to attract and showcase top-tier talent.
A glimpse into Future seasons and New Projects
Looking ahead, van amburg provided insights into upcoming seasons and new ventures. Executive producer David E. Kelley is reportedly hard at work on Season 2 of “Presumed Innocent,” which has already garnered four Emmy nominations. “David has a great plan and a great story for season two, but I think we’re keeping that under wraps for now,” Van Amburg teased, building anticipation for the new installment.
While there were no immediate updates on further seasons of the critically acclaimed “Pachinko” (which received two nominations) or “Dope Thief,” Van Amburg was effusive in his praise for Brian tyree Henry’s performance in the latter, which earned him a limited/anthology nomination. ”We all cheered as that moment came across this morning,” he said. “He’s so great in ‘Dope Thief,’ I think his performance is just amazing. That’s a show that the audience really enjoyed as well. His performance was so deserving.”
The future also holds exciting new content, including Jason Momoa’s upcoming series “Chief of War” and the highly anticipated Season 4 of ”The Morning Show.” “That show is always pushing boundaries and entertaining, and Season 4 is no different,” Van Amburg stated. “They have fun with the subject matter. But I also think they always treat it with the import that it deserves.” He humorously added a nod to the show’s prescience, noting, “And never forget, ‘The Morning Show’ sent a morning news anchor into space before ‘CBS mornings’ did.”
Van Amburg concluded with a lighthearted remark about the platform’s ability to anticipate trends, quipping, “That’s a rarefied air when you can be as predictive as ‘the Simpsons’ is.” This sentiment reflects Apple TV+’s ambition to not only entertain but also to lead and innovate in the streaming landscape.
