Apple Shifts Focus to Smart Glasses, Pauses Vision Pro Upgrade
Apple has strategically redirected its resources, pausing advancement on a planned upgrade to its Vision Pro headset to prioritize the creation of smart glasses designed to compete directly with Meta Platforms’ offerings. This internal shift, announced last week, signals a meaningful recalibration in Apple’s spatial computing strategy.
The company had been working on a more affordable and lightweight version of the Vision Pro, internally referred to as ”N100,” initially slated for release in 2027. However, Apple is now reassigning personnel from the N100 project to accelerate the development of its smart glasses program. This move suggests Apple recognizes the growing momentum and market potential of the smart glasses category, and the need to respond swiftly to competitors like Meta.
While the Vision Pro represents Apple’s initial foray into spatial computing, the company appears to be betting on smart glasses as the future of everyday augmented reality. The decision to pause the N100 project doesn’t necessarily mean the cheaper Vision pro is entirely abandoned, but it does indicate a lower priority compared to establishing a strong foothold in the smart glasses market. this strategic pivot highlights the dynamic and competitive nature of the emerging extended reality landscape.
