Abbott Nutrition Recall and its Impact

The current formula shortage stems largely from a voluntary recall initiated by Abbott Nutrition in February 2022. The recall involved powdered infant formulas, including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare, manufactured at the company’s Sturgis, Michigan facility due to concerns about Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport contamination.
This recall significantly reduced the overall supply of infant formula in the U.S., as Abbott is a major manufacturer. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation found evidence of sanitation issues at the Sturgis facility, leading to a partial shutdown and further disrupting production.
As of January 30, 2026, the Abbott Sturgis facility remains under increased FDA scrutiny, with ongoing requirements for corrective actions before full production can resume. The FDA announced steps toward reopening the facility after Abbott completed corrective actions, but full restoration of supply is still in progress.

The FDA and the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) investigated multiple infant illnesses linked to the recalled Abbott formulas.The CDC reported that as of December 10, 2022, there were four confirmed infant cases of Cronobacter sakazakii infection and one confirmed case of Salmonella Newport infection linked to the recalled products.
