Aptamil Recall: South Korean Mothers Worry Over European Formula Crisis

by Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor

Parents across the United States are expressing anxiety over the availability of infant formula, as supply chain issues adn a major product recall continue to impact the market. Concerns are rising about access to essential nutrition for babies, especially those with specific dietary needs.

Abbott‌ Nutrition Recall and its Impact

The current formula shortage stems largely from a voluntary recall initiated by Abbott Nutrition in February 2022.⁤ The recall involved powdered infant formulas, including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare, manufactured⁤ at the company’s Sturgis, Michigan facility due to concerns about Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport ⁣contamination.

This recall significantly reduced the overall supply of infant formula in ⁤the U.S., as Abbott is⁣ a major manufacturer. ‍The Food ⁣and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation found evidence of⁢ sanitation issues at the Sturgis facility, leading to a partial shutdown and further disrupting production.

As of January 30, 2026, the Abbott Sturgis facility remains ⁢under increased⁢ FDA scrutiny, with ongoing requirements for corrective actions before full production can resume. The FDA⁢ announced steps toward reopening the facility after Abbott completed corrective actions, but full restoration of supply is⁢ still⁣ in progress.

Health‍ Concerns Related to Contaminated Formula

Infant formula ‍contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport can be life-threatening for ⁢newborns. ⁣ Cronobacter can cause sepsis ⁤and meningitis, while salmonella can lead to severe diarrhea and dehydration.

The ‌FDA and the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) investigated multiple infant illnesses linked to the‌ recalled Abbott formulas. The CDC reported that ‍as of December 10, 2022, there were four confirmed infant cases of Cronobacter sakazakii infection⁣ and one confirmed case of Salmonella Newport infection‌ linked to the recalled products.

Government Response and WIC Program

The U.S. government has taken several steps to ‍address ⁤the infant formula ⁢shortage. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for ⁢Women, Infants, and Children‌ (WIC) plays a crucial role in providing formula to low-income families.‍

The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has granted flexibilities to WIC state agencies to allow participants to purchase ⁣choice formula brands and sizes. ‌ The USDA also authorized the use of emergency waivers⁢ to increase access to ⁣formula for‌ WIC participants.

In May 2022, the Biden-Harris Administration invoked the Defense Production Act to prioritize the ⁢production of infant formula and authorized the Department of Defense to use commercial aircraft to ⁣transport ⁢formula from overseas. The White House released a fact sheet detailing these actions.

Finding Formula During the Shortage

The FDA provides guidance to consumers on where to find infant formula during the ‍shortage. Parents⁤ are advised to ⁢contact their healthcare provider for advice on alternative formula options.

The ‍FDA also recommends checking with local retailers, including grocery stores and pharmacies, for availability. The FDA’s website offers a list of resources‍ and ⁢tips for finding formula.
