Aragon Initiates 2026 Budget Process Amid Political Uncertainty
The Aragon government is set to begin preparations for the 2026 budget, but faces headwinds from political disagreements and delays in crucial financial data.
AragonS Finance Counselor, Bermúdez de Castro, announced that the order to start the 2026 budget process will be signed this week. Government departments will then have a month to submit their financial needs for the community accounts.
The counselor expressed hope that the Ministry of Finance will provide necessary data this month to facilitate Aragon’s budget planning. The budget relies on forecasts of assigned and own taxes, fees, advanced payments, settlements, and deficit projections. “We hope that the minister calls us and we have all this sudoku,” he stated.
Simultaneously occurring, the government is working on a decree to increase the remuneration of officials. The exact salary increase for 2025 remains unknown, and the 0.5% payment corresponding to 2024 is pending approval from the central government. An extension or credit supplement will be approved before year’s end.
Political Opposition Questions Budget Delays
Álvaro Sanz, a deputy from United Left, has raised concerns about the lack of a 2025 Aragon Budget. He urged the government not to make excuses, suggesting that strained relations with Vox,a parliamentary partner, are a factor.
IU argues that the necessary data for budget preparation has already been detailed in court appearances by the Director General of Taxes. Sanz stated that advisors and general directors already have designed budgets and initial expense ceilings.
Sanz questioned the real reasons behind the budget’s absence, alluding to rumors of a possible election advance after the summer, which the PP ranks have dismissed.
Sanz hopes that budgets will be brought to the courts of Aragon so that they can be negotiated with those who are really interested in having accounts for the community in relation to the rest of the parliamentary formations that also make up the Aragonese hemicycle.
