Connolly Secures Key Support as Presidential Race Heats Up

Catherine Connolly, a prominent left-wing TD, has garnered critically important backing from across the political spectrum as she prepares to formally launch her campaign for the presidency. The election to succeed michael D. Higgins is anticipated to take place in late October or early november.
Broad coalition of Support Emerges
The campaign for Connolly has seen a notable surge in endorsements, including the ten TDs and one senator from the Social Democrats. Acting party leader Cian O’Callaghan expressed his delight at Ms. connolly’s decision to run, highlighting her as a strong candidate.
Adding to this support is Dublin Bay South TD Eoin Hayes, who, despite being suspended from the Social Democrats, has confirmed his backing for Ms. Connolly.Further bolstering her campaign, Donegal TD Charles Ward of the 100 per cent Redress Party and Tipperary South Self-reliant Seamus Healy have both pledged their support. Independent Senator Eileen Flynn also declared her intention to back Ms. Connolly,describing her as an “absolute powerhouse” and expressing her hope to sign Connolly’s nomination papers.Mr. Ward articulated his belief that Ms. Connolly would serve as a “true independent voice for Ireland,” while Mr. Healy stated she would be an “excellent candidate” and looked forward to campaigning alongside her.
The momentum continued with former Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, now an independent deputy for laois, also lending his support to Ms. connolly’s bid.
People Before Profit Considers Endorsement
People Before Profit’s steering committee has recommended that its two TDs, Richard Boyd Barrett and Paul Murphy, support Ms. Connolly. A final decision from the wider party is pending.
“Catherine Connolly is a popular, principled figure on the left and we are pleased that she has put herself forward as a candidate,” Mr. Murphy commented on Saturday. “We welcome that the Social Democrats have also given their support to Catherine and we urge others on the left to join her campaign.”
other left-wing politicians, such as Independent Senator Lynn Ruane and Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger, are yet to declare their positions. Ms. Coppinger indicated that her party had not yet discussed the presidential election.
Green leader Roderic O’Gorman stated that while his party had not been formally approached, they where “open to discussions and would consider any approach seriously.”
Connolly’s Political Journey and Stance
Ms. connolly, a former Leas-cheann Comhairle, departed the Labor party in 2006 after being denied the opportunity to run as Michael D.higgins’ running mate in the 2007 general election.
A left-wing TD and barrister, Ms. Connolly is known as an ally of former MEPs Clare Daly and Mick Wallace. She has been a vocal advocate on critical issues, including Ireland’s neutrality, women’s rights, and the conflict in Gaza.
In a statement to the Galway City tribune, Ms. Connolly confirmed her intention to formally launch her election campaign next week,stating,”My mind is made up to run.” She cited “support from across the spectrum” and acknowledged that “Labour and Sinn Féin are still completing their own internal processes which I fully respect.”
Major Parties Deliberating
Meanwhile, Fine Gael has opened its nominations process, with former European commissioner Mairead McGuinness widely tipped as a potential contender. Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin are reportedly still deliberating on their respective approaches to the presidential election.
