Addressing Complex Challenges in Argentina’s Food Landscape
Buenos Aires recently hosted a national nutrition congress from September 3-5, drawing 2,500 professionals – including nutritionists, researchers, and policymakers – to discuss critical issues facing Argentina’s food system. A key focus was the interconnectedness of food safety, healthy diets, and environmental health.
Discussions centered on the entire food chain, from supply and consumption patterns to production methods, food loss and waste, and equitable access to nutritious options. The need for behavioral changes to promote healthier eating habits was also a prominent theme.
Integrated Approach to Public Policy
A presentation titled “Technical Document: The food System in Argentina: Food Safety, Healthy Diets and Environmental Health” highlighted the complexity of the system and the necessity for a comprehensive, collaborative approach to intervention. Officials emphasized the importance of dialog and cooperation across different sectors and stakeholders.
The Ministry of Health is actively working with other government agencies to implement public policies related to food and nutrition, demonstrating a commitment to a whole-of-government strategy. This coordinated effort aims to address the multifaceted challenges within the food system.
Empowering Local Adaptation of Dietary Guidelines
Efforts are underway to update Argentina’s food guides for the population (guías Alimentarias para la Población Argentina, or GAPAS) through the Federal Health Council (Consejo Federal de Salud, or Cofesa). This initiative aims to empower individual provinces to tailor dietary recommendations to their specific resources and health profiles.
The goal is to facilitate localized solutions that are both effective and enduring, recognizing the diverse needs and circumstances across the country. This decentralized approach allows for greater responsiveness to regional variations in food availability and health challenges.

Broad Range of Topics Covered
Beyond the core themes of the food system, the congress featured presentations and talks on a wide array of topics, including the prevention of nutrition-related risk factors, innovative food technologies, and strategies to enhance food security. These discussions underscored the breadth and depth of expertise within Argentina’s nutrition community.
