Arrest Made in Chiang Rai as Youthful Criminals Target Innocent Victims

Chiang Rai police have made a major breakthrough in a case involving online fraud that led to tragic consequences. On October 20, 2023, three individuals, aged between 18 and 19, were arrested for their involvement in a scheme where a fake Facebook page was used to deceive unsuspecting victims into purchasing mobile phones. This elaborate scam took a dark turn when a 19-year-old student from Nakhon Si Thammarat tragically took his own life after falling victim to the fraudulent operation.

Swift Action by Law Enforcement

The diligent efforts of the Technology Crime Investigation Department, in collaboration with the Chiang Rai Provincial Police, have resulted in the issuance of arrest warrants for the three horse account owners responsible for perpetrating this fraud. The suspects, consisting of one male and two females, were promptly apprehended and now face charges of fraud.

Unraveling the Web of Deception

Authorities meticulously analyzed the evidence, notably the money trail, which directly linked the case to the heart-wrenching suicide of the Mathayom 6 student. The victim had innocently ordered a mobile phone from the fraudulent Facebook page, purportedly associated with a reputable shop in Wiang Phang Kham Sub-District, Mae Sai District. However, once the student had paid, the page abruptly vanished, leaving the youngster devastated and out of pocket.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the primary perpetrator, Ms. Dokkaew Kaewjem from Chaiyaphum Province, had already been arrested. It was also discovered that various other individuals’ bank accounts and ATM cards had been exploited in this elaborate scam. Furthermore, authorities traced withdrawals of ill-gotten funds to an ATM located at the Thai-Myanmar border in Mae Sai District.

For further interrogation and legal proceedings, all apprehended suspects were transferred to SOT 5, enabling law enforcement to gather additional evidence.
