Spacecraft Duo ⁤to⁣ Create Artificial Solar⁤ Eclipse,Unlocking Secrets of the Sun’s Corona

A groundbreaking mission by the European Space agency (ESA) aims to mimic ⁣a ⁤total solar eclipse, offering unprecedented insights into the sun’s enigmatic outer atmosphere, known as the corona.

launched on December 5th from India’s Satish Dhawan Space ‌Center, the Proba-3 mission⁢ consists of two spacecraft: the Coronagraph Spacecraft (CSC) and the Occulter (OSC). Working in tandem, ⁣these spacecraft‌ will create an artificial eclipse, allowing scientists to study the corona in detail.

“Right now, this [the corona] ⁤is a ⁢region of the sun that has ‌been poorly investigated, and scientists nowadays don’t really‍ understand some of the phenomenon⁤ that’s happening there,” explained Ester Bastida, Proba-3 systems engineer, in a recent⁢ ESA video. One ⁤of the biggest mysteries ‌surrounding the corona is its extreme temperature.⁣ While the sun’s surface hovers around 5,500 degrees ⁢Celsius (9,932 degrees ⁢Fahrenheit), the corona reaches⁣ a staggering 1-3 million degrees‌ Celsius (1.8-5.4 million degrees Fahrenheit).

How Will the Artificial Eclipse Work?

The two spacecraft will utilize precise formation flying (PFF)‍ technology to position themselves 150 meters⁣ (492 feet) apart, perfectly aligned with the sun. The occulter, ⁤equipped with a 140cm (55 inch)⁢ disk, will cast a controlled shadow onto the Coronagraph spacecraft, effectively blocking out the sun’s ⁣light.

this maneuver requires millimetre-level accuracy, allowing researchers to‍ observe the ⁣corona for up to six hours per orbital cycle.

Unveiling the Secrets of the Corona

The Proba-3 ⁤mission has two primary goals:

  1. Demonstrating PFF Technology: The mission will showcase ⁣the capabilities of PFF, which uses GPS and‌ inter-satellite dialog to maintain precise distances ⁣between the spacecraft.
  1. Studying the Corona: The Coronagraph spacecraft is equipped with a specialized instrument called ASPICCS (Association of Spacecraft for ‍Polarimetric and Imaging Investigation of the⁢ Corona ‍of the‍ Sun). This coronagraph⁣ will capture detailed images of the corona, helping scientists understand its extreme temperature and other⁢ enigmatic properties.

Why is This⁣ a Big Deal?

The corona is typically invisible⁤ due to its faintness, only becoming visible during rare total solar eclipses. Proba-3 will provide scientists with a continuous, on-demand window into this crucial region of the sun.

“By studying the sun corona,‍ we can better predict space weather and extreme geomagnetic storms, which can cause major disruptions to satellites and systems on Earth,” the ESA stated in a recent video.

The ⁢success of Proba-3 could revolutionize our understanding of⁤ the sun and its impact on Earth, paving‌ the way for more accurate‌ space weather forecasting and⁣ improved protection of our technological infrastructure.
