Astronauts’ Extended Stay⁢ on ISS Pushed to Late March

Delayed SpaceX Launch Leaves Crew Awaiting⁢ Return

Two ‌American astronauts, ⁢Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, will remain ⁣aboard the International Space Station (ISS) until at least late March, extending their mission ⁤by several months. Originally scheduled for an⁣ eight-day⁣ mission, the veteran‍ astronauts have‌ been stranded since June due to malfunctions with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which transported them to‍ the ISS.

Initially, ⁤NASA planned to bring the⁤ astronauts back to Earth using SpaceX’s ‌Crew-9 mission, which launched in late September with two passengers rather‌ of the planned four‍ to ‌accommodate the returning crew. though,‍ the space agency announced on Tuesday ‍that the launch of Crew-10, which will replace Crew-9, has been postponed from February to late March.

This delay is ⁤attributed to the need⁤ for additional time to develop⁣ a new Dragon‌ spacecraft, according to NASA. The ⁤postponement further extends the‍ astronauts’ stay in space, potentially pushing their total time aboard the ISS to over⁢ nine months.

“The transition hasn’t been⁣ that challenging,” Williams‌ said during a ⁤press conference‍ in early September. “We both come from ⁤the Navy, we’ve both been deployed before. We’re‍ not surprised when missions change.”

The astronauts’ ⁤extended stay follows ⁣a series of setbacks ⁤for‍ Boeing’s Starliner ‌program. During ‌their initial flight test, problems‍ were detected with the spacecraft’s⁢ propulsion system, raising concerns about its reliability. this setback ⁢marks ‌another challenge for ⁢the American aerospace giant, which ⁣has faced ongoing issues with its ‌commercial airliner ‍fleet.
