Qualifying Struggles and Q1 Elimination in Baku

Both Audi pilots failed to advance past the opening qualifying segment on September 26, with Bortoleto taking 17th position and Hülkenberg lining up directly behind him in 18th. Bortoleto finished 0.264 seconds behind Liam Lawson, while Hülkenberg lagged 0.385 seconds behind the cutoff. Prior to the Baku weekend, Audi had consistently managed to place at least one car into the second qualifying segment during their first Formula 1 season. The difficulties surfaced early during free practice sessions on the high-speed circuit. Bortoleto managed 13th place in the third practice session with a lap of 1:45.854 minutes, while Hülkenberg completed 18 laps to finish 15th in 1:45.998 minutes. Hülkenberg also dealt with a gearbox issue during the second practice session on September 24, which further disrupted the team’s preparation.

Traffic Disruptions and Missing Slipstream Support

On-track incidents compounded the team’s lack of raw speed during the knockout session. Hülkenberg stated that he missed a crucial aerodynamic tow on his first flying lap and was subsequently blocked by yellow flags triggered when Fernando Alonso slid off track into the escape road at turn 15. Alonso drove back onto the track directly in front of the Audi driver, forcing Hülkenberg to lift off the throttle. The day’s result is naturally disappointing, because I had the feeling we were more competitive than the final placing suggests, Hülkenberg explained, noting that the R26 lacked top speed. Bortoleto experienced similar interruptions on his final run. The driver reported a lack of grip on his last run and was forced to lift off the throttle under yellow flags. Bortoleto remarked that the weekend felt sluggish overall, stating that the team struggled for pace, grip, and top speed despite showing promise at previous rounds like Monza.

Evaluation of Audi’s Major Upgrade Package

The setbacks in Azerbaijan placed scrutiny on Audi’s upgrade package, which introduced revised versions of 14 components of the R26, including a new front wing, floor, engine cover, and rear wing. Hülkenberg ran an older specification during the first practice session before both drivers switched to the new parts from the second practice onward. Racing Director Allan McNish acknowledged that the team could not dismiss the difficult session entirely as mere bad luck. There is no reason to sugarcoat a difficult session for us today, McNish admitted, pointing out that windy conditions prevented the team from extracting the car’s single-lap potential. Regarding the new components, McNish added that the true benefits of updates typically materialize only after three or four races as teams learn to optimize them. Bortoleto similarly downplayed the idea that the upgrades were a failure, suggesting the car may have gained downforce while other competitors made concurrent steps forward.

Race Outlook on the Baku Street Circuit

Despite starting from the ninth row, the Audi squad maintains hope that the unpredictable nature of the Baku street circuit can create strategic openings during the race. Hülkenberg emphasized that safety car periods and on-track incidents frequently shuffle the order in Azerbaijan. Starting from the back is never easy, but this is Baku and opportunities can arise, so we must remain alert and ready to seize them, Hülkenberg said.
