Two Australian Tourists Hospitalized for Alcohol Poisoning in Laos
Two 19-year-old Australian women are receiving medical treatment in Thailand for suspected severe alcohol poisoning after consuming tainted drinks in Vang Vieng, Laos. The women, who were on vacation, became ill after failing to check out of their hostel on November 13. Hostel staff arranged transportation to a hospital upon learning of their condition.
The women had participated in an event at the Nana Backpacker Hostel where more than 100 guests were served free shots of Lao vodka. No other guests reported issues. After the event, the women went out and returned early the next morning.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs is providing support to the women’s families, who have traveled to Thailand to be with them. They are currently hospitalized in Bangkok and Udon Thani.
The cause of the poisoning is uncertain, but methanol is sometimes used in mixed drinks at substandard bars and can lead to severe poisoning or death. Reports indicate that two Danish tourists may have also died from alcohol poisoning in Vang Vieng around the same time.
Vang Vieng is known as a popular destination for backpackers who enjoy partying and adventure activities. Despite the incident, local businesses were operating normally, with many bars and food stalls bustling in the area.
Jasmine Antonius, a Dutch tourist, mentioned she would be more cautious with her drinks after hearing about the incident, calling it a wake-up call for tourists. The hostel has temporarily halted the practice of offering free shots in light of the situation.
