Bachena Khatun, a Bangladeshi national, underwent gallbladder surgery 20 years ago. A pair of scissors got stuck in their stomach due to a mistake they made in performing the surgery. As a result, they suffered from severe abdominal pain for so many years.
The scissors were removed from their abdomen during surgery last week at Sadar Hospital in Bangladesh’s western Khulna division. Dr Valur Rahman Nayan, who supervised the operation, said the patient was recovering.
‘She underwent surgery in 2002 at a clinic in Meherpur to remove a gallbladder stone. When the surgery was over, the scissors used for it accidentally got into their abdomen. Now when he came to us due to severe abdominal pain he advised them to take an X-ray. An X-ray revealed scissors lying inside Bachena’s abdomen, ‘he explained.
Family members say Bachena underwent gallbladder surgery using all his savings. Rosina, the daughter – in – law, said the family was happy the surgery was successful. ‘Bachena always complained of abdominal pain. But we never thought that something stuck in the abdomen was the cause of the abdominal pain ‘, said Rosina.
