New Delhi: The Central Government has frozen the entire bank accounts of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, which has been carrying out charitable activities across the country during Christmas celebrations. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to announce the move. The reason for the freezing of bank accounts is not clear. The Union Home Ministry has not yet commented on the matter.

Mamata Banerjee was shocked to learn that the Union Ministry had frozen all bank accounts of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in India during Christmas. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Twitter that the move was “shocking”. Mamata Banerjee has blamed the freezing of bank accounts across the country for leaving 22,000 people without food and medicine, including staff and patients of the Missionaries of Charity.

She reminded them that even though the law is above all else, they should not compromise on charitable activities. Missionaries Charity officials also declined to comment on the central action. Gujarat police have been investigating allegations that girls were forced to wear crosses and read the Bible at a Missionaries of Charity shelter in Gujarat. The inquiry was launched following a complaint by the child welfare authorities.

But the Missionaries of Charity Iowa denied the allegations. In 1950, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize by the Mother of the Roman Catholic Church, who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta and dedicated her life to it.
