Bariatric Surgery for High BMI Patients: Safe and Effective Solutions for Obesity Over 70

A study led by Dr. Florina Corpodean from Pennington Biomedical Research Center found that metabolic and bariatric surgery is safe and effective for patients with severe obesity. The research, published in Obesity Surgery, included data from 84 patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 70 kg/m² or higher.

The study showed that only 0.7% of these patients had serious complications within 30 days after surgery. Despite a higher likelihood of emergency department visits, the overall complication rate remained low. The researchers measured weight loss at 30 days, 6 months, and 1 year, confirming significant reductions in weight that were maintained.

Dr. Philip Schauer, from the Metamor Institute, noted that BMI levels should not deter healthcare providers from offering surgery as a treatment option. Similarly, Dr. John Kirwan emphasized the importance of such studies in addressing obesity, highlighting their potential to boost confidence in the safety and effectiveness of metabolic surgery.

Results indicate that patients experienced notable weight loss and low rates of reoperation in the first year after surgery. The findings support the notion that high BMI should not exclude patients from bariatric surgery considerations.
