Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham is facing a tense battle to prove his fitness ahead of England’s crucial March friendlies and, the 2026 World Cup. England manager Thomas Tuchel has conceded that the 22-year-old’s recovery from a hamstring injury is a “race against time,” casting a shadow over his availability for upcoming international fixtures.

A Hamstring Strain Adds to Bellingham’s Injury Concerns

The injury occurred during a La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano on February 1st, forcing Bellingham off the pitch in visible distress after less than ten minutes of play. Initial assessments suggested a recovery period of around five weeks, potentially allowing him to feature in England’s March matches against Uruguay, and Japan. However, reports emerging from Spain now indicate a potentially longer absence, possibly stretching to a couple of months.

This latest setback comes after Bellingham underwent shoulder surgery last summer to address a long-standing ailment. The surgery kept him out of early England matches in the 2025-26 campaign, but he had returned to form, showcasing his talent in both La Liga and the Champions League for Real Madrid.

Tuchel Offers Cautious Optimism

Tuchel, who recently committed to a new contract as England manager, acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Bellingham’s fitness. Speaking at the UEFA Nations League draw, he stated, “The club [Real Madrid] is a bit more defensive on the outlook regarding the weeks of his recovery. Jude is pushing, and as we know him, he is determined and super professional. He will try everything to be with us in March. Of course, we are in contact. That is a normal thing to do, and we wish him all the best… Whatever we can do for him, we will help and support him. It’s a little race against time.”

Despite the concerns, Tuchel expressed a degree of optimism, adding, “Personally, I am optimistic [about Bellingham’s fitness]. But I am not sure.” The March friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley Stadium represent England’s final opportunity for preparation before the World Cup squad is finalized, adding significant pressure to Bellingham’s recovery timeline.

Competition for England’s No. 10 Role

Bellingham’s potential absence opens up opportunities for other players vying for a central playmaking role in Tuchel’s squad. The competition is fierce, with players like Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Morgan Gibbs-White all pushing for a starting position. Former England striker Michael Owen recently highlighted Rogers as a potential favorite in Tuchel’s eyes.

Owen also emphasized the value of having Bellingham in the team, stating, “I would find a place for Jude Bellingham if he’s fit. He’s one of the world’s best players, not only England’s best players.” He suggested that Tuchel might need to adjust the formation to accommodate multiple creative players, potentially shifting players out of their preferred positions.

England’s World Cup Preparations

England’s schedule includes two fixtures in Florida as part of their World Cup preparations, culminating in their tournament opener against Croatia on June 17th. While Tuchel has not ruled Bellingham out of contention for the World Cup, his fitness will be a key factor in determining his inclusion in the final squad.

Despite the injury, Bellingham retains significant credit with the national team, and Tuchel indicated he is willing to consider him even if he misses the March internationals. The situation remains fluid, and the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the influential midfielder can overcome his injury and play a role in England’s World Cup campaign.
