Taking the path less travelled (and maybe a bit longer),
Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas announced on social media after ditching private jets to ride his bicycle 350km from Malaysia to Singapore, as reported by The Washington Post.
The 37-year-old Cadillac driver began his journey following the Bahrain Grand Prix, which was held at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia due to security concerns in the Middle East. Instead of flying or driving, Bottas opted to make the 350km (217 miles) off-road and gravel trek under his own power alongside his partner, professional road and gravel cyclist Tiffany Cromwell.
The Journey Across Malaysia
Bottas has documented his odyssey on social media, sharing clips and photos of his travels. In one post on X, he wrote, Yea I’m riding to Singapore. On the gravel roads less travelled with my new @canyon_bikes Grail CFR. See you there.
Another video showed him cycling in the dark with a torch and headlight illuminating the dirt trail and path ahead. He also posted a photo on Instagram showing the post-ride meal after making it to safety following extensive time cycling. A Cadillac team spokeswoman stated that the Finn would take three days to complete the trip. On Monday, during the second day of the ride, Bottas covered 161.91km across nearly six hours.
Bottas Prepares for Singapore Grand Prix After Cycling Events
Bottas is no stranger to endurance cycling, having taken part in numerous races and gravel events alongside Cromwell, who is an Olympian and multi-time event winner. His past cycling endeavors include competing in a UCI-sanctioned gravel event in the Czech Republic, a race in Estonia, and involvement with FNLD GRVL in Finland, alongside a pre-birthday ride in the mountains of North Carolina and a Western-themed ride in Wyoming.

Bottas must arrive in Singapore by Thursday to fulfill his media commitments ahead of the race weekend. Practice for the Singapore Grand Prix starts on Friday, with the event scheduled for October 9-11 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, marking Bottas’ 11th start at the Marina Bay Circuit where he has four top-10 finishes in his career, headlined by a third-place finish in 2017.
