BeReal,the photo-sharing app that enjoyed a surge in popularity in 2022,is attempting a comeback after a period of declining downloads. The app, known for prompting users to post unfiltered, real-time photos once a day, was sold to French gaming company Voodoo in 2023 for €500 million.
Ben Moore, managing director at BeReal, unveiled the company’s strategy at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The plan focuses on attracting Gen Z users who are seeking an choice to heavily filtered and curated social media content. Moore saeid the company is committed to building “the next big thing” with BeReal.
Despite a 60% drop in worldwide downloads from 31.5 million in 2023 to 12.7 million in 2024, bereal reports maintaining approximately 40 million active users, primarily in Japan, France, and the U.S. Year-to-date downloads are down 50% compared to last year, according to Sensor Tower.
The relaunch strategy involves investing in advertising, particularly on other Voodoo Games apps. BeReal also hopes to generate interest through college campus ambassadors and sponsored parties where downloading the app is a requirement for entry.
The app is also receiving a facelift with new features. “Nearby” will allow users to discover others in their area,and the app will offer suggestions for people who post similar content. Moore said the goal is to “bring back the social aspect of what social media was built for.”
