Profitability targets face workforce reductions
The Munich-based automaker aims to return its Automotive Segment’s EBIT margin to a range of 8 to 10 percent by the start of the next decade, according to a September 30, 2026 press release. As an interim target for 2028, BMW expects an EBIT margin of 3 to 5 percent. To reach these financial goals, the company plans to reduce divisions and associated management roles by 20 percent by the middle of 2027.
New models target global markets
Alongside its cost-cutting measures, BMW outlined plans for two new vehicle lines arriving in 2028. The carmaker intends to launch an additional Sports Activity Vehicle positioned above the BMW X7 specifically for the US market, alongside another fully electric Neue Klasse model for Europe. BMW also stated it is expanding artificial intelligence applications across development, purchasing, production, sales, and aftersales, while increasing localization for models built for Chinese customers.
Bavarian battery plant begins production
Production officially started at BMW Group’s new Irlbach-Straßkirchen plant in Bavaria on October 1, 2026, following a EUR 1.00 billion investment, according to a BMW Group release. The site operates on a two-shift basis to supply sixth-generation high-voltage batteries to BMW Group Plant Munich, where workers install them into the BMW i3.
