A suspect is in custody following an attack in Boulder, Colorado, that left at least six people injured. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, was arrested in connection with the assault. According to FBI Special Agent Mark Michalek,Soliman allegedly yelled,”Free Palestine,” before using a makeshift flamethrower. The suspect arrested was also injured and received hospital treatment, though details of his injuries were not released.
Boulder Police Chief steve Redfearn stated that while it would be irresponsible to speculate on a motive, the victims’ injuries were consistent with being set on fire.He emphasized the peaceful nature of the demonstration and condemned the violence. The Boulder community is urged to support the victims and their families.
The incident occurred amid rising tensions in the U.S. related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, which has seen an increase in both anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents.
“This was a stunning Sunday afternoon in downtown Boulder on Pearl Street, and this act was unacceptable,” Redfearn said.
Witness Brooke Coffman, a University of Colorado student, described seeing multiple women with burns, one severely injured. She also reported seeing a shirtless man, presumed to be the attacker, holding a bottle and shouting.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis stated he is closely monitoring the situation and condemned hate-filled acts. boulder’s Jewish community also released a statement expressing sadness and heartbreak over the attack.
