BP has appointed Simon Henry, a former chief financial officer of rival shell, to its board⁣ as the energy⁢ major seeks to strengthen its oil and gas expertise among non-executive directors. The move comes in direct response to⁣ mounting pressure from investors concerned about the company’s strategic direction and recent share performance.

Strengthening Oil and Gas Expertise on the Board

Henry, who ⁤served as CFO of Shell from 2009 to 2017, will join BP’s board starting in September. His appointment is ⁢part of a broader overhaul aimed at⁤ ensuring the board possesses the “necessary skills and experience” to effectively navigate the company’s ⁤evolving strategy, BP stated.

Since leaving‍ Shell after a 35-year tenure, henry has held non-executive director positions ⁢at Lloyds ‍Banking Group,PetroChina, and North Sea oil producer Harbour Energy. ⁢He currently serves on the board of mining group Rio tinto, a role he will relinquish in the second half of⁢ 2025.

The addition of Henry follows the earlier appointments this year of Ian Tyler and US oil executive Dave Hager to BP’s board, further signaling a commitment to bolstering industry knowledge at the leadership level.

shift Back to Traditional Energy and Investor Activism

BP’s move to reinforce its oil and gas expertise coincides with a ⁣significant strategic shift. In February, the company abandoned a four-year effort to pivot towards renewable energy, announcing a renewed focus on its core oil and gas business. This change in direction followed the emergence of US activist investor Elliott management as ⁤a‍ major stakeholder in BP, with Elliott pushing for a recalibration of the company’s strategy.

“The BP board would‍ benefit from Simon’s deep and broad career in the energy industry, understanding of global markets and extensive and varied experience,” saeid‍ outgoing chair Helge Lund.

However, despite this refocusing,‍ BP’s shares have underperformed compared to its peers, fueling speculation about a potential takeover. this has placed increased pressure on chief executive Murray Auchincloss to deliver improved results and defend the⁤ company’s independence.

Chair Search⁣ and Future Outlook

BP is currently seeking a new chair to succeed Helge Lund. The selection process‍ is being⁣ closely monitored by investors,⁢ who view the appointment as crucial for⁤ managing shareholder expectations and warding ⁤off any potential acquisition attempts. According to a person familiar with the matter, the board is in the ⁤final ⁢stages of evaluating candidates.

The company also announced ‍the immediate departure of non-executive director Pamela Daley, citing personal reasons. Daley, who has served on the board as⁣ 2018, is also a director at BlackRock.

The appointment of Henry ⁤and the ongoing search for a new chair represent pivotal moments for BP as it navigates a complex energy landscape and responds to the demands of a changing investor base. The company’s ability to successfully execute its strategy and maintain its independence will depend heavily‍ on the⁢ expertise and leadership of its board.
