Hot Air Balloon Fire in Brazil Kills Eight,Safety Role Under Scrutiny

PRAIA GRANDE,Brazil – A hot air balloon burst into flames and crashed in Santa Catarina state on Saturday,killing eight,according to fire officials. The accident is prompting scrutiny of the safety role and regulatory oversight of hot air ballooning in the region.
Video footage showed the multi-colored balloon engulfed in smoke as it fell rapidly in Praia Grande. Witnesses reported seeing people falling from the burning aircraft.
Santa Catarina’s civil police chief, Ulisses Gabriel, expressed his grief on X, stating that three victims were found embracing. Thirteen survivors were hospitalized, while a total of 21 people, including the pilot, were on board, the fire brigade reported.
Gov. Jorginho Mello, also posting on X, conveyed his condolences and pledged state support for rescue efforts and family assistance. he has directed authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly.
President Luiz Inácio lula da Silva offered federal assistance to the victims and local authorities.
According to police chief Tiago Luiz Lemos, the pilot, a survivor, said a fire ignited inside the balloon’s basket, prompting him to descend and order passengers to jump. Lemos told Folha de Sao Paulo that some passengers were unable to jump before the balloon crashed.
The hot air balloon flight, operated by Sobrevoar, was scheduled for 45 minutes, reaching an altitude of 1,000 meters, at a cost of 550 reais (about $100) per person.
Sobrevoar stated that it met all regulations and had a clean safety record before the accident. “Despite all necessary precautions and the efforts of our pilot…we are suffering from the pain caused by this tragedy,” the company said, announcing an indefinite suspension of operations.
Praia Grande is a popular destination for hot air ballooning in southern Brazil. A similar incident occurred last Sunday in Sao Paulo state,resulting in one death and 11 injuries.
