The Deliberation Committee on Election Broadcasting for the 22nd General Election held its last meeting yesterday.

There were 18 items on the agenda of the retrial, including MBC’s fine dust weather forecast, where “blue number 1” was the reason for disciplinary action.

Some members of the commission suggested careful discussion.

After underlining that it “has little relevance for elections” and that “the purpose of the National Defense Commission is not sanctions”, a proposal was put forward to “avoid a waste of administrative power by lowering the level of disciplinary actions to the extent which may be annulled by the court in the future.″

There was also concern that “the press freedom index could fall further next year due to the excessive use of disciplinary actions”.

However, the existing disciplinary findings were confirmed under the leadership of the majority of ruling party members, and only one request for a retrial was accepted.

A member of the ruling party’s recommendation committee, who described First Lady Kim Kun-hee as a “normal housewife” at a meeting late last month, said: “There are critical articles that border on gang bullying , attacking not only President Yoon himself but also his mother-in-law and wife indiscriminately,” and added, “This is press freedom.” “Isn’t it high?” he asked.

Reporters Without Borders, which recently published the Press Freedom Index, has been vilified as “a fundamentally unreliable organization accused of being left-wing”.

President Baek Seon-ki, who seemed to be aware of the controversy over “political deliberation” that arose during the period of his activities, emphasized that “we never made the decision to limit free speech, and this was a decision made with the collective intelligence of nine members”.

However, some point out that this was an expected outcome, as Ryu Hee-rim, head of the Korea Communications Standards Commission, initially decided that the institutions should recommend members of the Defense Review Committee with a member of the ruling party.

″It was called the ‘Broadcast Intervention Committee’ and the ‘Committee for the Suppression of Broadcasting,’ but there were real concerns that it would be biased in its deliberations because it had been formed with a bias towards the conservative side, and it was a very surreal drama group of absurdity. This has happened… ”

This year’s Defense Review Committee, which decided the largest number of legal sanctions ever in five months, issued 14 cases of “official disciplinary action,” the highest level, with 11 cases focused on the MBC alone.
