The bereaved family asked Mr. Yang, 40 years old, who was shot and killed by police officers in Los Angeles (LA) while he was seeking help from the authorities to receive treatment for mental illness, the US prosecutor’s office indicted the police officers.

Two members of Yang’s bereaved family, including his parents and brother, held a press conference with his defense team and the Los Angeles Korean Association at the Los Angeles Korea Center on the 9th (local time) and demanded a prosecution investigation into these police officers.

Yang’s lawyer, Robert Sheen, said, “We ask that the LA County District Attorney indict the police officers involved,” and explained that the police officers could be charged with murder and obstruction of justice under federal law.

He continued, “If the district attorney does not charge these people, we will ask federal prosecutors to charge them with federal crimes.” “We ask for any evidence that can help us explain how he was murdered,” he added.

Yang, a Korean national who had lived in LA with his family since childhood, was shot dead by police at his home in Koreatown in downtown LA around 1 am on the 2nd.

At the time, Yang’s family saw that Yang, who suffered from a mental illness such as bipolar disorder, was suffering and asked the LA County Department of Mental Health (DMH) to transfer him to a treatment facility. DMH staff arrived at Yang’s home and sought police assistance after Yang refused to be transported to the facility.

The police (LAPD) said that Mr Yang made contact with a weapon and opened fire, but there was criticism that the force was excessive.

The bereaved family believe that the police covered up the truth, citing the fact that the police did not even call an ambulance after the shooting, did not inform them of Yang’s death for over an hour, and that the view is already cleaned when access is granted.

The LAPD previously issued a press release on the 3rd saying it was conducting an internal investigation, but did not disclose the body cameras worn by the officers involved. The results of the investigation and an official position on this incident have not yet been released.

The defense team said, “We thought the era of the police using overwhelming and brutal force was over, but we learned that was not the case,” adding, “Nine police officers were used to deal with one mentally ill person, and the police used Tasers and a number of other weapons.” “It was not possible to explain why the method was not used,” he noted.

“The police destroyed all the physical evidence at the crime scene,” he said. “They spent several hours disinfecting the crime scene and cleaning the apartment. “Even a rookie police officer can see that this is an act of obstruction of justice,” he stressed.

The defense team also said that Mr Yang had previously sought help from DMH when his symptoms worsened and received treatment support at the facility several times, but the whole process was peaceful, and they will also investigate why he called staff DMH the police urgently. on the day of the event.
