Advancing Comprehensive Sex Education in Iwate Prefecture

Educators and midwives in Iwate Prefecture have launched a group with the aim of popularizing sex education that incorporates human rights and gender perspectives. They promote “comprehensive sex education” that covers a wide range of topics, including interpersonal relationships and sexual violence, rather than just focusing on bodily functions and reproduction.

The Iwate Circle, a branch of the “Human and Sexuality” Education Research Council, is a significant step towards this goal. As the second such organization in the Tohoku region, it brings together eight members, including elementary school teachers, university professors, midwives, and former directors of childcare facilities in the prefecture.

A lecture will be held on the 14th to commemorate the group’s launch, featuring Tetsuo Mizuno, the representative director of the Sex Education Association. The event will take place at the Prefectural Public Hall in Uchimaru, Morioka City, from 2:30 pm to 4:40 pm. Participation is open to all, with a fee of 500 yen, and online participation is also available.

The Iwate Circle’s mission is to change people’s perceptions of sex education and increase opportunities for acquiring correct knowledge. By promoting comprehensive sex education, they aim to create a more informed and empathetic community.
