Silverstone, UK – Ferrari’s notable pace at Silverstone has captured the attention of championship leaders McLaren, as Lewis Hamilton expressed growing confidence in his new car following a promising opening day of practise. While the Scuderia showed strong form, McLaren and Red Bull are among the teams introducing new aerodynamic upgrades for the British Grand Prix weekend, aiming to counter the Italian team’s resurgence.
Ferrari’s Resurgence and Hamilton’s Growing Comfort
Ferrari’s performance on Friday, notably their race simulation runs, has been a significant talking point. Charles Leclerc, who topped the race-pace simulations, declared the day “good” and “positive,” highlighting the team’s strength in race trim. “We still need to find some pace in qualifying,” Leclerc admitted, acknowledging McLaren as the likely benchmark for Saturday’s shootout. “But in the race I was happy, I am finding my way. We are very strong in the race but we have to do a step forward in qualifying.”
For Lewis Hamilton, the day marked a personal milestone. Despite a challenging start to his tenure at Ferrari, the seven-time world champion, who boasts a record nine victories at Silverstone, feels he is finally “becoming more at home in the car.” Hamilton stated, “I’m progressing a lot with the car and much more comfortable on knowing where it needs to be.” While acknowledging that P2 wasn’t perfect,he was clear about the direction for improvement: “definitely know the changes we need to make to the car.”
Upgrades and Adversity for McLaren and Red Bull
The Silverstone circuit is a proving ground for new developments, and both McLaren and Red Bull have brought significant upgrades to their cars. McLaren, along with Red Bull, are running new floor designs, a common strategy for teams seeking an edge at their home race or a track that frequently enough highlights aerodynamic efficiency. However, the day was not without its difficulties for some of the front-runners. lando norris, fresh off a win in Austria, noted the formidable pace of the Ferraris. “the Ferraris have been very, very quick today and they shall be tomorrow,” Norris commented. “We have a bit of work to do. It looked maybe a bit too good today. The Ferraris always catch up into P3 like they did last weekend, so pleased with today but nothing to be too proud about just yet.”
The struggles were more pronounced for Max Verstappen, who described his day as “quite a bad day.” The reigning world champion cited a lack of balance and consistent performance across corners. “Just no balance in the car and quite tough corner to corner. So quite a poor day for us in general,” Verstappen reported, indicating that Red Bull will need to find significant improvements overnight to challenge at the front.
What to Watch For This Weekend
As the Silverstone weekend unfolds, all eyes will be on Ferrari’s ability to translate their impressive race pace into qualifying speed. McLaren and Red Bull will be working diligently to unlock the potential of their new upgrades and overcome the balance issues that plagued them on Friday. For Lewis Hamilton, the continued progress at his most successful circuit offers a glimmer of hope for a strong performance in front of his home crowd. The battle for supremacy at the British Grand Prix is shaping up to be a compelling contest.
