British Telecom cuts 55,000 jobs due to introduction of AI – Haber.ba

British Telecom has announced it will become a “smaller scale company” as it plans to cut its workforce by as many as 55,000 jobs by 2030 – more than 40% of its global workforce – to cut costs.

The company employs about 130,000 people worldwide, of which about 30,000 are external workers, and in Great Britain it has about 80,000 employees.

BT announced on Thursday that it will reduce its total workforce to 75,000 to 90,000 between 2028 and 2030.

The telecom group started rolling out broadband and 5G infrastructure, and benefited from digital trends such as AI.

They also announced that by the end of the decade they expect to complete the most labour-intensive part of rolling out the next generation of fiber optic networks and 5G across the UK, meaning fewer engineers will be needed.

The company also aims to take advantage of digitizing its business and taking advantage of new technology, such as artificial intelligence, which could be used for calling and network diagnostics.

BT, which reported a 12% fall in annual pre-tax profits to £1.7bn at the end of March, aims to save £3bn a year by 2025.

“By continuing to build and connect rapidly, digitizing the way we work and simplifying our structure, by the end of this decade the BT Group will rely on a much smaller workforce and significant reductions in core costs. The new BT group will have fewer workers and a brighter future,” BT CEO Philip Jansen is quoted as saying Bankar.me.

The company also reported that its pay TV sports joint venture with Warner Bros Discovery made a loss of £123m last year. BT said the joint venture “underperformed against the business plan” due to a number of factors, including “cost-of-living pressures affecting the premium sports subscription market”.

Vodafone announced on Tuesday that it will lay off 11,000 workers over the next three years, which is the largest number in the history of the telecommunications company, writes the Guardian.
