On the 11th (local time), VMA announced each award category and nominees for this year’s awards ceremony on MTV’s official website.
BTS was nominated for the first time this year in two categories, ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Editing’, including ‘Best Pop’ and ‘Best K-Pop’. -pop) and ‘Best Choreography’ were nominated for a total of 5 categories. ‘Best K-Pop’ and ‘Best Choreography’ were nominated for 3 years, and ‘Best Pop’ for 2 years in a row.
BTS was nominated for ‘Song of the Year’ with ‘Dynamite’, which was released worldwide in August of last year. In this category, 24K Golden’s ‘mood’, ‘Leave the Door Open’ by Silksonic, a collaboration band formed by Bruno Mars and Anderson Pak, and ‘Leave the Door Open’ by Cardi B and Megan di Stallion were included in this category. ‘WAP’, Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitating’ and Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ were nominated.
In the ‘Best Editing’ category, Silk Sonic’s ‘Live the Door Open’, Drake’s ‘What’s Next’, Harry Styles’ ‘Treat People With Kindness’, Justin Bieber and Daniel Caesar, Gibion’s ‘Peaches’ and Miley Silas and Dua Lipa’s ‘Prisoner’ were nominated. BTS will challenge for the award with ‘Butter’ in this category.
In the ‘Best Pop’ category, Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’, Billie Eilish’s ‘Therefore I am’, Harry Styles’ ‘Treat People With Kindness’, Justin Bieber, Daniel Caesar, and Gee Bion’s ‘Peaches’, Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Good 4 u’ and BTS’ ‘Butter’ were nominated.
The ‘Best Choreography’ category is an award given to both artists and choreographers, and BTS and Big Hit’s music performance directing team were nominated together. BTS will compete against Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Pooh Fighters, Harry Styles, Marshmallow and Halsey. Previously, at last year’s MTV VMA, BTS won the award for ‘ON’.
In the ‘Best K-Pop’ category, in addition to BTS’ ‘Butter’, (G)I-DLE’s ‘DUMDi DUMDi’, Black Pink and Selena Gomez’s ‘Ice Cream’, and MONSTA X’s ‘GAMBLER’ ), Seventeen’s ‘Ready to love’, and TWICE’s ‘Alcohol-Free’ were nominated.
BTS, which was nominated for MTV VMA for the first time in 2019, became the main character in two categories of ‘Best Group’ and ‘Best K-Pop’ in 2019. Last year, ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Pop’, ‘Best K-Pop’, and ‘Best Group’ won a total of 4 awards.
