Abuja, Nigeria – Former Nigerian President Muhammadu buhari, a pivotal figure in the nation’s democratic journey, has passed away at the age of 82. His body is expected to be repatriated from London to Nigeria on Tuesday, with burial arrangements set to take place later the same day in his hometown of Daura, located in the northern state of Katsina.
The announcement was made by the state governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, who confirmed the repatriation schedule and the planned burial location. Preparations for the funeral were already underway in Daura on Monday, as the country’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, traveled to London to oversee the repatriation of the former leader’s remains.
Buhari’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria. He first held the reins of power as a military leader between 1984 and 1985, before returning to led the country as a democratically elected president for two consecutive terms from 2015 to 2023. His election in 2015 was historic, as he became the first opposition politician to successfully unseat an incumbent president as Nigeria’s return to civilian rule.

In honor of the former president, national flags across nigeria will fly at half-mast for seven days, commencing Sunday.Buhari will be accorded full state honors, a testament to his significant contributions to the nation.
Governor Radda also expressed his deep respect for the former president,describing him as “the embodiment of the common man’s aspirations.”
Even Ibrahim Babangida, a former military ruler who had previously ousted Buhari in a 1985 coup, released a statement acknowledging thier differing perspectives but affirming his unwavering belief in Buhari’s sincerity and patriotism. “We may not have agreed on everything – as brothers often don’t – but I never once doubted his sincerity or his patriotism,” Babangida stated.

While Buhari’s personal brand of integrity and honesty resonated deeply with manny Nigerians, his tenure also faced scrutiny regarding economic performance and national security. Alexis Akwagyiram, managing editor at Semafor and a seasoned observer of Nigerian politics, commented on Buhari’s popularity stemming from his perceived incorruptibility.
However, Akwagyiram also pointed to the challenges faced during his presidency, especially concerning the economy and the persistent security issues.He noted that insurgencies from groups such as Boko Haram had unfortunately “proliferated under his tenure,” highlighting a significant area of concern for many citizens.
