Can not be closed forever; Danger of few being reluctant to vaccine: Health Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George said that while the state is preparing a strong defense against Kovid, no one should be opposed to Kovid vaccine. There are only a few people left to take the first dose of the vaccine. The state now has sufficient vaccine stock. Vaccination centers are also available nearby. There are about 1200 vaccination centers functioning at the government level across the state. However, the minister said the number of people at many vaccination centers was very low.

From October 1 to 5, the total number of vaccines given was 5,65,432, including the first and second doses. Of these, only 1,28,997 received the first dose. No one should be averse to vaccination. The minister also asked those still to be vaccinated to register on the Covin website immediately or get the vaccine directly at the nearest vaccination center.

93.04 per cent (2,48,50,307) of the population vaccinated in the state were given the first dose and 42.83 per cent (1,14,40,770) were given the second dose. A total of 3,62,91,077 doses of the first and second doses have been given so far. According to the Centre’s estimated population of 2021, about 1.5 million people are expected to be vaccinated. Of these, about 10 lakh people with Covid need to be vaccinated after 3 months. Therefore, only about eight and a half lakh people are yet to get the first dose of vaccine.

Statistics show that the Kovid vaccine reduces the risk of developing Kovid, protects against serious illness and significantly reduces the risk of hospital stay and death. Of the 1,22,407 Kovid cases so far, only 11 per cent have been admitted to hospital or field hospitals. Of the average 1,42,680 cases treated between September 27 and October 4, only 2 percent needed oxygen beds and only 1 percent needed ICUs. The number of patients currently being diagnosed and treated in hospitals, field hospitals, ICUs, ventilators and oxygen beds decreased by 12, 12, 24, 10, 8 and 13 percent this week compared to the previous week. Hospital stay rates and serious cases are showing a declining trend. The minister said that vaccination was also the reason for all this.

The state cannot be closed all the time. The lives and livelihoods of the people must be protected at the same time. Colleges began to open. Schools will also open early next month. At that time, it is a danger to the society that a few people are reluctant to take the vaccine. So the rest should get the first dose of the vaccine as soon as possible, the minister said.
