[디지털투데이 AI리포터] An intelligent ‘parrot’ characterized by a large, strong beak and an intelligent ability to imitate people’s words. This parrot is said to be able to learn to use and create tools and even understand the concept of probability. So, can parrots use electronic devices too?

According to online media Gigene, on the 22nd (local time), a research team from Northeastern University in Massachusetts, USA, conducted a study to help parrots use tablets more conveniently by analyzing the handling habits of parrots, making it a topic heat. Interested in the possibility that animals can operate touch screens.

Associate Professor Rebecca Kleinberger, who led the study, found that the parrots were making video calls to other individuals after she taught a group of parrots how to make video calls using tablets and smartphones last year. Through this, research findings have been published showing that parrots gain happiness by learning skills from others.

Next, the research team collected data on tactile interaction with the touch screen by having 20 more parrots play for less than 30 minutes a day for 3 months. As a result, due to the tongue-using nature of parrots, touch accuracy was generally higher and larger parrots performed relatively better.

Furthermore, the parrot’s handling habits were confirmed, including that the tongue moves as it is and facilitates dragging, that the pressure is less than that of a human finger, and that the parrot touches the screen more than 40 times in one row with a quick tongue movement.

“This is a great example of how studying animal bodies can help design new interfaces that can enhance animals,” Kleinberger said.
