England suffered a 31-22 defeat against Canada at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa on October 23, 2026, marking the first time the Red Roses have lost consecutive matches since 2016. The result follows Canada’s 24-21 victory in Toronto and brings an end to the reigning world champions’ recent dominance in the WXV Global Series.
Ottawa Crowd Propels Canada Past Red Roses
A vocal crowd of 14,117 fans watched the third-ranked Canadian side overcome the top-ranked English team following an earlier North American record of 18,621 set in Toronto. Canadian captain Sophie de Goede led her team with two tries, while Julia Omokhuale, DaLeaka Menin, and Savannah Bauder also crossed the try line for the hosts.

The match saw England trail 12-7 at halftime before briefly seizing a 17-12 lead early in the second half through a drop goal from Zoe Harrison and a rolling maul try by Amy Cokayne. Canada quickly answered when de Goede scored her second try in the 55th minute to reclaim a 19-17 advantage, followed by quick tries from Menin and Bauder to stretch the lead to 31-17.
Unbeaten Streaks Tested by Consecutive Losses
The back-to-back defeats mark an unusual stumble for an English squad that has lifted nine of the past 10 Six Nations titles and lost only three of their past 74 matches. The losses also mark the first time England has dropped consecutive fixtures since 2016, ending a period of sustained international success that included world titles and long unbeaten runs snapped by Canada over the past year.

England players pointed to execution errors in the opposition 22-meter zone as a decisive factor in the Ottawa fixture. We were riding the waves, building phases, scrum, set piece, we were very strong. Sometimes it’s the bounce of the ball or it doesn’t swing your way. We couldn’t execute when we got in their 22, that’s a big one to reflect on for sure,
Jones said.
Upcoming Pacific Four Tournaments and USA Fixtures
Canada will carry the momentum of their back-to-back victories into the Pacific Four tournament scheduled for 2027. Meanwhile, England must complete their current WXV campaign with a final fixture against the United States, with the team expected to pursue a big response.
