Canadians Lead the World in Remote Work, Surveys Indicate
OTTAWA (April 27, 2025) – A recent study suggests Canadians are embracing remote work more than any other nation. the findings come from a survey published earlier this month by the Stanford Economic Policy Research Institute (SIEPR).
SIEPR Survey Highlights Canadian Remote Work Ethos
The SIEPR survey, which polled 16,000 university graduates across 40 countries, indicated that Canadians average 1.9 remote work days per week. Researchers focused on surveying “groups with high occupations with high possibilities,” according to the study.
Following Canada, the United Kingdom ranked second in remote work adoption, with Finland, the United States, germany, and China also showing significant numbers. Portugal, Hungary, and the Netherlands also reported high rates of remote work.
English-Speaking Countries Dominate Remote Work Trends
The survey revealed that remote work is most prevalent in English-speaking countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, the United states, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. These nations average between 1.5 and 2 remote work days per week. Conversely, Greece, China, Japan, and Korea reported the lowest rates of remote work.
Hybrid Work Remains Stable
While the proportion of remote work decreased in 2023, it appears to have stabilized between 2024 and 2025. Employees with children showed a stronger preference for hybrid work arrangements, while those without children often favored fully remote or fully in-office setups. Notably, women with children expressed the highest preference for remote work.
The SIEPR survey was conducted online from November 2024 to February 2025. Participants were recruited through Bilendi, a market research agency.
Canadian Union Survey Echoes Positive sentiment
Separately, a survey conducted in october 2024 by the Canadian Public Trade Union (PSAC) found that 81% of respondents viewed remote work positively, with 66% reporting improved well-being as a result.
The PSAC report emphasized that “home work is not just convenience, but common sense.” Only 15% of respondents indicated a preference for working exclusively in the office.
Remote Work Boosts Productivity
Studies also suggest that remote work can enhance employee creativity, passion, happiness, and motivation. According to the National Statistical Office, the productivity of federal officials increased by 4.5% during remote work periods between 2019 and 2023.
