An era has begun in which AI can diagnose cancer using only tissue biopsy images. It is expected to not only reduce screening costs but also have a significant effect on the development of new drugs.

This is reporter Jang Yoon-jeong.

When we input a lung cancer patient’s biopsy image into AI, it produced results in just 52 seconds.

The area that has turned red is where a genetic mutation has occurred. It predicted a 98% chance of transforming into a specific cancer cell.

Park Yong-min / AI Researcher
“There are more than 10 diseases included in the model, and the main diseases targeted are lung cancer and colon cancer. It is distinguished that the drug effect varies greatly depending on genetic mutations….”

AI can diagnose cancer by predicting genetic test results based on pathology images alone, without expensive genetic testing.

Once commercialized, it could give patients quicker and more accurate treatment options and pharmaceutical companies a faster time to market for new drug development clinical trials.

AI also manages pet diseases. By analyzing X-ray images of dogs and cats, it is possible to detect 47 types of hereditary diseases, including patellar luxation and heart problems, in advance, and it is already being used in over 600 animal hospitals nationwide.

Steelwon / Veterinarian
“How far in advance can a young puppy have patellar luxation? This one is quite severe. It has an 84% chance.”

American semiconductor company Nvidia also entered the bio industry by releasing a generative AI model called ‘Bio Nemo’ that helps develop new drugs.

Jensen Huang / NVIDIA CEO
“With our digital work on genes, proteins, and amino acids, we can now understand the ‘language of life’ through AI machine learning.”

Artificial intelligence is leading a new wave in the bio industry, with groundbreaking effects in terms of time and cost.
